While it's primarily about using the Shared Media Licensing/Weed format to distribute music, it also has information that anyone can use to help them promote their music on the Net. This is a recommendation to enter the world of Weed - and get connected with many free sites with tons of free music on what will soon be the largest music network on the planet.

I have seen the future - and it is Weed.

A Renaissance of the music industry is occurring, changing how music is distributed, whose music is distributed, and who benefits from the sale of a song. A Renaissance that has the potential of making every piece of music free while still making money for the artists AND making money for the fans who promote the music. It takes away the inequality of the labels reaping the financial benefits of artistic works, and puts the power back into the hands of the bands and the fans. It promotes listening to new music. It promotes sharing music. And it is spreading like ... a Weed.

Weed is a new company with a simple product, a technology to legally distribute music online, with the simple philosophy that "sharing is good." It's a fairly simple idea. Songs are "Weedified" which means digital rights management is applied to the song which allows someone to listen to the song for free three times, then on the fourth listen, a window opens asking the listener to purchase the song using a PayPal account. If that person buys the song - and turns on other people to the song, the seller, or sharer, of the song now gets 20% of the sale, the original sharer gets 15%, the band (or rightsholder) gets 50% of the sale, and 15% goes to Weed for admin costs. Now the person who bought the song can share it - and if someone buys it, the new sharer gets 20% of the sale, the previous sharer gets 10%, the original sharer gets 5%, the band still gets their 50% - keeping everything nice and legal. Weed makes full use of the new economic reality that there is minimal cost to distributing digital media and sharing is good.

Weed's Cool Thing #1 - You can check out tons of music for free. Weed truly allows a celestial jukebox where you can listen to any of the songs for free. The network of Weed music sites is growing like crazy including every genre imaginable. It's not just one site like SoundClick.com or GarageBand.com, it's hundreds of sites - and each site has someone who has actually listened to the music and can recommend what's good.

Weed's Cool Thing #2 - Everyone makes money. Not only does Weed pay the musician 10 times what they get from iTunes, but the person re-distributing the song is also paid. Theoretically, you could get your music for free - and actually make money from your music collection! Because Weed uses PayPal, the seller and the band have immediate access to the money earned, and can see who is buying the music.

Weed's Cool Thing #3 - Getting songs Weedified is very simple task and can happen within a few days. You don't even really need a website to distribute the Weedified songs - you can email them, put them up on peer-to-peer networks, add them to CDs or promotional DVDs.

Weed's Cool Thing #4 - There is no reason for someone to hack a Weed file and do something illegal because the incentive is there to keep it as is: (1) the person distributing wants to earn money (2) to earn money the person's name has to be attached to the file. (Besides the monetary reasons not to hack a Weed file, the Weedified files have been found to be extremely secure.)

Weed's Cool Thing #5 - Weed isn't just a site - it's a community of music fans, musicians, bands, and promoters. There are hundreds of sites popping up of people distributing music on Weed files. From college students posting Weed files of their favorite local bands, to larger sites that are part of the Weed network promoting multiple bands.

Weed's Cool Thing #6 - You'll find the longest, widest tail of music on the Weed network. Wired magazine recently had an article about how the low cost of digital distribution has meant more access to more obscure music (a longer tail of music.) Because Weed finally offers musicians a way to easily protect and distribute their music, and allows people to check out new music for free, Weed not only makes the tail longer - it turns it into the longest, widest beaver tail of music ever.

Weed's Cool Thing #7 - Weed solves the problem of peer-to-peer, illegal file sharing. Most people I know who distribute music illegally, do it because (1) they want to be considered part of the music industry (2) they want bragging rights of distributing X number of songs (3) they feel the labels have ripped them off long enough charging insanely high prices for music and keeping the majority of the profits while the artists are left with the scraps. Weed solves all of these problems. Fans of a band can now buy the songs and re-distribute as much as they want. (Digital music gives you an infinite warehouse.)

Weed's Cool Thing #8 - Weed doesn't kill labels. Labels just need to realize that times have changed. Labels should see this as an opportunity to watch a band plant it's roots, grow and spread their name. Weed can also give rise to more independant labels by offering low cost, massive distribution.

Weed's Cool Thing #9 - Bands should see Weed files as an opportunity to earn additional revenue and keep the cost of music down by getting product endorsements (i.e. Fender guitars, Virgin phones, House of Blues...) and incorporating it in the artwork that appears when playing a song. This "ad" will then be further distributed everytime the Weed file is shared.

Weed's Not So Cool Thing - OK, there is one downside. Weed files are in wma format and have to be played using the Windows Media Player or any compatible player. So what does this mean? Well, actually not much. WMA files can be played on almost every "MP3" player including Creatives, iRivers, Rios, and Souls to name a few. (MP3 player is just a bad term and should be replaced with portable media device. And Apple should be ashamed for limiting the iPod.)

Do yourself a huge favor and check it out now while Weed will actually PAY YOU to check it out. Setup an account and Weed will put $5.00 in your account to buy any of the Weed songs on any of the sites. And guess what? You can send the Weed songs to anyone you want - they can listen for free - and if they buy the song - you're paid, the artist is paid...

Weed - sharing is good.

www.weedshare.com

UPDATE: Want to "Weedify" your songs and start spreading your music? They cover every genre - acoustic blues to industrial - and while it's a nice idea to open the door to everyone, you have to ask yourself - after sifting through countless rank amateur attempts - why? Why don't they sift through what they have and point out the best? I'll give them a hint - start with Andrea Ramirez.

Smooth Acoustic Blues From Andrea Ramirez
I found some decent nugs stashed away in UberLabel's Acoustic Blues section. Andrea Ramirez has amazing vocal talent combined with some damn fine players. It's soft, it'll sooth your soul.

UberLabel
Andrea Ramirez

Free Euro Tunes From PeopleSound - German Hip-Hop From FREIER MIT HERZ!!

The PeopleSound concept is like a cheap schmorgasborg - have some major label samples to pull in the traffic - then fill the buffet with indie filler. You can create playlists on the site, let other people listen to your mix, listen to other people's mixes - a great way to hear new music.

Free MP3's From Freier Mit Herz!!!!!
There's something about listening to lyrics that I can't understand that really turns me on. It makes sense considering these bands are known for their open recording and free distribution policies. A really great site delivering free MP3's of jam-band shows is Nugs.net.

Nugs has their own stash of live shows from about fifty bands - from Addison Groove Project to Zero. The cool thing about these live recordings of jam-bands is that you can find some pretty unique covers.

Les Claypool & The Flying Frog Parade
Les Claypool is one of those musicians who truly broke sonic territory with his band Primus, doing crazed songs like "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" and "Wynona's Brown Beaver." If you're into odd covers, get over to Nug.net and check out Les' version of King Crimson's "Thela Hun Ginjeet." The original bassist to play this song was Tony Levin - master of the stick bass. Les is able to do a decent version - but dissappointingly, leaves out most of the song's lyrics - including the main story.

Check it:
Nugs.net

DMusic's Goldmine of Indie Music - Dig Some Tasty Skank

DMusic is an indie only site - and amazingly, 90 percent of what I listened to I would have paid for. Probably never ... 'cause it sucks. Who wants to go digging through someone else's trash?

And that's the problem with SoundClick. It's the world's largest garbage filled garage. Most of the "bands" are one person. Not that one person can't make a masterpiece - especially with the tech available. But the majority of bands I looked into are one person with one song idea and no idea how to produce. The "acid jazz" band the site recommended was more like an acid casualty trying to cover a Phish cover of some obscure Dead tune. My favorite indie band Stomprocket may be on the site, but hell, they're everywhere. Don't waste your time on SoundClick- EXCEPT to check out the hot-rodded pop stashed in the back - The Fantastic 5.

Free MP3's of The Fantastic 5
The Fantastic 5 is a '50's influenced garage-psych-pop-punk-rock band out of Miami, Florida. Kind of like digging through piles of trash and finding a cherry red '65 Chevy Malibu SS under cover. This band burns in a cool lo-fi way.

Check it, go direct:
The Fantastic 5

MSN Music Giving Away Free Albums (almost) - Get the Full Taste of Mos Def's "The New Danger"

We all knew it was only a matter of time before Microsoft jumped onto the stage and started pimpin' tunes. More of the same you say? Yes and no. Pricing is the same as most others - .99 per song, most albums $9.90. What makes MSN's service stand out is that they allow you to listen to COMPLETE albums for free through their Listening Booth. It's not a download, it's a stream. But that's still cool in my book - and here's why - you get the whole meal, not just a 30 second taste of the sauce.

Free Listening - Mos Def's "The New Danger"
Mos Def is back with a hip-hop based jambalaya of blues, rock, funk and soul. Bits of N.E.R.D., Andre 3000, and Ben Harper. While some reviews are callin' it a bland mix, and I agree there's some spoons of white rice, you gotta' taste every piece to get it. And that's why I like the MSN Music service - you can listen to the whole album - all 18 freakin' songs - and taste the full flava'.

Check it for free:
MSN Music

HUNDREDS of Free MP3's From the Amazon Including the Year's Best "Destiny" by Zero 7

So we all know about Amazon.com - it's where you go to buy virtually anything online. Well a few months ago they even started carrying musical instruments - guitars, basses, drums, etc... at INSANELY low prices. We're talking Musician's Friend prices (a quick check showed same prices on both sites.) And it's the good stuff - Gibsons, Schecters, Deans....

What does this have to do with free MP3's? Well, it wasn't until I checked out the guitars that I really took a good look at Amazon's music service - and found hundreds of FREE MP3's - and once again was totally blown by what Amazon was giving away - downloads of Sigur Ros, Rancid, Yo La Tengo, and one of my favorites Zero 7's "Destiny".

Zero 7 is this amazing electronica duo - two producers from the UK mixing smooth soul and funk samples with live vocals into sonic acid-jazz bliss. "Destiny" from their debut release Simple Things surrounds you in sweet serenity. (Cool music fact: the Dangermouse remix of "Somersault" was the 100 millionth iTunes download.)

Get the download of "Destiny" (and a couple hundred other MP3's) from the Amazon:
Amazon.com

Indie Music Sites and Pimping Hard 9

A few weeks ago I wrote on another blog about the death of Hollywood as the entertainment capital. The new power in entertainment is with technology. The power to create AND the power to distribute. That power isn't in Hollywood. It's in Seattle, Redmond, Cupertino and other media technology hubs - all outside of Hollywood. Best of all, this new power is accessible to virtually any artist anywhere in the world.

While the majors like iTunes are allowing independents to get on-board, there are sites just for independents. Here's three of the best independent only music sites:

Unsigned Music Network

Audio Lunchbox

Garage Band

These sites all have free MP3's - so even if you're not in a band, check them out - and check out some free new music.

For major distribution of independent music, check out Loudeye's IndieSource. Loudeye distributes music to the majority of online music retail sites. While they don't sell to end-users, I'm including them because if you really want massive distribution, you need to check them out.

Free MP3's of Hard 9
Here's a link to one of my favorite Indie bands, Hard 9 on Garage Band. Hard 9 is a 100 MPH joy ride in a stolen muscle car. Ballsy and loud. Billy Zoom of X produced a couple of their tunes, including the nitro-fueled "Creep".

Free MP3's of Amy Spear - One of the Best Female Singers in Rock

I used to play guitar in a band called the Poppyseeds. We were an average psychedelic garage rock band with an extraordinary singer - Amy Spear. The problem with the Poppyseeds was that we went through bassists like Spinal Tap going through drummers. In two years we went through ten bass players - from a punk junkie to a jazz cop to a Lemmy (Motorhead) look-alike. What made the struggle worth it was playing with Amy. She's one of those singers that has it all - amazing song writing skills, massive vocal range, and a solid stage presence.

Amy Spear's new self-titled band plays a very cool mix of dance pop rock. Her guitarist and co-writer Alan Reed is a cross-genre master weaving blues, country and rock licks into these highly produced songs. Think Led Zeppelin backing Kylie Minogue.

Her site amyspear.com has five free MP3's.

You can also find Amy Spear on The Unsigned Musicians Network.

Free iTunes - "Stick Up Kid" by Lyfe Jennings

This week's free iTune is the R&B single "Stick Up Kid" by Lyfe Jennings. Most songs are .99 each, most albums are $9.99 -- however they're always having specials promoting different indie labels and indie artists. The gig is you have to buy lunch cards - $25, $50 or $100 and use them to buy the music.

Is the selection any good? Sure, if you get into indie bands. Is the service any good? It is if you know your indie music, or don't mind taking a chance (which is why I like the fixed fee with unlimited listening services like Rhapsody.)

How do you get free downloads? They always have one free download on their frontpage - to get more is a little tricky. Sign up for an account - you don't have to provide any bank info. Then go to this link for the downloads (or click the circle icon "Free MP3".) Click on one of the the artists which will bring you to that artist's page. Select the songs with price FREE, click the shopping cart icon. This will bring you to your shopping cart screen - click Checkout. At checkout, choose to pay by Lunchcard - which will have $0 amount - and deselect "Pay by Credit Card." Choose Checkout - then download your FREE MP3's!

Some of the artists not on the linked page also have free songs - you'll just need to search them out.

Cool band to check out with some free MP3's is The Exit (Foo Fighters crossed with the Clash.)

Check it:
http://audiolunchbox.com/

2 Absolutely FREE Songs From Rhapsody

I have one coupon code for 2 free songs from Rhapsody. Think Radiohead crossed with Ben Folds with echos of Steely Dan.

Give yourself a phat J favor, and check it:

StompRocket and Sado - The Most Talented Rock Guitarist On This Planet

There's a guitarist in Santa Barbara that goes simply by the name of Sado (short for Lucedo Argentino Rabaudi) - but his playing is anything but simple. This guy is one of - if not THE most talented rock guitarists I have seen play. Sado's two bands are Stomprocket and Carried by Six. You might know Jimmy Page as being the guitarist of Led Zeppelin. The Yardbirds is a band from the '60's known for having included in their roster of rotating guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page.

These songs are from one of their last concerts - a band at their breaking point - but this concert was later to be known as one of those legendary nights. Among the classics that you'll hear is Jimmy Page using a violin bow during the finale song "I'm a Man" - giving the audience a taste of things to come with his next band Led Zep.

Historic, English blues-rock at it's best.

Check it for FREE:
http://www.led-zeppelin.org/multimedia/yardbirds.html

Free iTunes - "Good 'Ol Love" by Masta Ace

This week's hook-up for free iTunes is a smooth little hip-hop track "Good 'Ol Love" by Masta Ace. Its an online music service - with a great twist - UNLIMITED listening!

Here's the gig - for $9.95 per month you have access to over 30,000 artists, 50,000 albums and 700,000 songs (the numbers don't work out because some albums have limited access). I listen to over 100 different songs per day. I also like checking out different artists - listening to their WHOLE song - and not worrying about paying for it unless I want to keep it. I've checked out more music in the past few months than I have in the past 10 years. For the $9.95, you listen to unlimited number of songs on their site, create playlists of those songs, and are able to use your license from ANY Windows PC -- Rhapsody is not Mac compatible :( . You also have free access to videos (I am blown away at the quality of the streaming.) Figuring downloading songs is going to cost anywhere from .79 to .99 each, the $9.95 per month cost is equal to about 10 to 12 songs.

Rhapsody also lowered their price on downloaded songs to .49 per song. They did this before in 2003 - and cut it off a month later. So get in on it before it ends. (Yeah, yeah, this blog was created after they dropped their price - but that's why I started doing this - to let you know who's got the deals.) Even when Rhapsody's price goes up to their normal .79 per song, they will still beat iTunes .99 per song.

The FREE stuff:
Check out Rhapsody for free - and see how unlimited listening has its advantages. Here's a link to their free trial:

Free MP3 Player From Napster

Napster is now legit. Kind of ruins that whole lawlessness and freedom of the Internet feeling.

But being legal has its advantages - mainly knowing that your'e not going to download some nasty virus or wake up with twenty feds at your door.

Is Napster any better than the other online music services? Not that I can see. It's still $9.95 per month plus .99 per song to download - so while it offers the same idea as Rhapsody (listen to as many songs as you want for the $9.95 per month) the download cost is higher. However, the download is pure MP3 unlike the Rhapsody download in Real's format.

But if you are going to get Napster, at least hook up with a FREE MP3 player:

My Musical Mind - A Massive Multi-Genre Playlist

Welcome to my musical mind - a massive multi-genre playlist.

I've been playing guitar in bands since the early eighties - everything from the heavy metal of Xerxes (Chicago) to euro-synth pop of Sector Q (Milwaukee) to the alt-country of Buck Storm/The Great Chiefs (Santa Barbara). The band I'm playing in now is BitchAss - we play fast, hard retro-punk rock.

But don't let that get you thinking that I'm just a punk-rock-metal-pop-country music lover.

I listen to everything from the early dub-reggea of Marley to experimental ambient of Eno and Fripp. Give me the English pop of Blur in the mornings, industrial afternoons with Ministry, and electronica nigths with Morcheeba.

Looking at my current playlist: Deftones, Sigur Ros, SuperGrass, Goldfrapp, Jay Shobe, XTC, Queens of the Stoneage...

This blog is going to be my public expose of online music - cool deals, cool music...

Visit often and expand your musical mind.
